Sliced Pecan Nuts |
Sliced pecans can be used in similar ways to walnuts although their flavour is quite different. The nuts are highly valued in pies and confectionary products as well as in ice cream, and in savour dishes.
The pecan is a native tree to North America with its name coming from the indigenous Americans, the Algonquins meaning 'nut requiring stone to crack'.
Pecans have a high fat content, and are high in calories. They provide carbohydrates, proteins, calcium, phosphorous, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin C, vitamin E, the complete vitamin B range of B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and small amounts of folic acid.
